In 2024, Mørenot Aquaculture sent a total of 635,053kg of end-of-life aquaculture equipment to be recycled, as the company’s recycling rate has risen from 64% in 2023 to 82% in 2024.
‘As a producer, we have a responsibility to contribute to a more circular and sustainable industry. The figures show that we are on the right track, even though this work is far from finished,’ said Liv Lund, ESG Manager at Mørenot, commenting that the company has implemented a number of projects related to sustainability and circularity.
‘In the fisheries and aquaculture sector we are already seeing good results in sustainability, such as reduced environmental impact and better resource use. But to be a leader, we must continue to improve. We must focus on innovative solutions and optimize production to meet both current and future sustainability requirements,’ she said.
Liv Lund believes that industry standards – which are constantly moving in the right direction – will turn blue industries into green winners.
Øistein Aleksandersen, CEO of recycling company Nofir, is impressed by the development and stresses the importance of this type of initiative.
‘One of the most important things that has happened in the legislation is the expectations for real measures within sustainability and circularity. We are clearly moving away from the throw-away society, and there are both requirements and expectations here, as with the producer responsibility scheme,’ he said.
‘At the same time, the fishing and aquaculture industry is well positioned to become circular, which reports also confirm. We also see this in our own collection figures.’
He said that Nofir has seen the volumes of geardelivered for recycling almost triple over five years. In 2024, a total of 8529 tonnes of gear were collected, of which 635 came from Mørenot Aquaculture.
