Due to low biomass levels, the Falkland Islands Fisheries Department has taken the decision to close this year’s second Loligo season.
This decision has been taken following analysis of the catch data following the resumption of fishing after the two-week pause, as well as the results of the two days of exploratory fishing.
This closure significantly affects the operations of sixteen freezer trawlers that operated in Falkland Islands waters by joint ventures between Spanish and Falkland Islands companies.
A Fisheries Department representative stated that this precautionary measure has been taken to try and ensure the long-term sustainability of the fishery.
‘The Department is already looking at what measures can be trialled or implemented ahead of the 2027 seasons to mitigate the issues with the second season in recent years, and will continue to work closely with industry on the matter,’ the Falkland Islands Fisheries Department states.
