Fishermen from Darłowo, Łeba, Ustka and the Puck Bay region on the Polish coast travelled to Warsaw last week to register their concern over the situation facing them in Baltic waters, making a fundamental demand for the protection of fish stocks and coastal ecosystems.
A partly outfitted, Skipsteknisk-designed pelagic trawler for Shetland owners has set off from Gdansk for the Larsnes Mek Verksted yard in western Norway which will fit out and complete the 75 metre vessel.
The Nauta Shipyard at Gdansk in Poland has sent a couple of large new fishing vessels down the ways and into the water, with partly-outfitted hulls launched for completion at yards in Norway and Denmark.
Skagen shipyard Karstensens Skibsværft has established its own construction base for producing hulls in Poland, and in addition to setting up its own company, it has acquired production facilities from Vistal Offshore in Gdynia, a modern facility built in 2013.
The partly-outfitted trawler Ora et Labora has been launched by Szczecin yard PTS for delivery to Vestvaerftet in Denmark.
The Nauta Shiprepair Yard in Poland has signed two contracts for building partly outfitted fishing trawlers. Both vessels have been ordered by Danish client, Karstensens Skibsvaerft, and Nauta now has twelve vessels at various states of construction that are being built for Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and UK fishing companies.
There is currently a high awareness of lost fishing gears and their impact on the marine environment, and there are increasingly initiatives to tackle the problem. In Poland coastal fishermen have mobilised to retrieve lost gear for their fishing grounds.
