The development of a port and business zone outside Ålesund has taken a significant step as the Giske community has pledged to embark on construction of a new quay for fishing and freight activity.
Giske kommune has signed an agreement with contractor A.Våge AS to carry out the construction, following the municipal council’s agreement with the recommendations of the municipal director and a joint chairmanship concerning the construction of a quay at Gjøsundneset.
‘The planned quay will be 165.70 metres long, in addition to the establishment of a diving platform. This will give a total mooring length of about 200 metres. The quay will be used as a fishing and freight quay, and will provide good conditions for further commercial development in the area,’ said municipal director Karl Andre Birkhol.
‘The construction of the quay is the first major result after the project plan for Gjøsundneset was adopted. The municipality expects that the initiative will trigger further investments already in the coming year, with the construction of a freezer and bunkering facility right next to the quay, which will make Port of Gjøsund to a regional port with a one-stop-shop offering.’
Work on the quay facility is expected to begin as soon as the commissioning permit is in place. The quay construction is expected to be completed before the end of 2026.
‘This has been a long-awaited offer, especially from the local fishing industry,’ said mayor Kenneth Langvatn.
‘The investment is important for Giske kommune , for the local fishing industry and for the maritime business community in the entire region. The quay will strengthen the infrastructure, create new opportunities for business development and contribute to increased value creation.’
