Grupeixe, the Portuguese subsidiary of Icelandic fishing and processing group Vinnslustöðin (VSV) has acquired Empresa de Secagem de Bacalhau (ESBAL), which specialises in frozen and dried saltfish products.
Acquired by VSV in 2019, Grupeixe has decades of experience on the saltfish market. According to the company, this latest acquisition is an important step in building up VSV’s presence on the Portuguese market, one of the most important for saltfish, increasing capacity to service the requirements of customers and consumers.
‘Buy acquiring ESBAL, we are taking the next step and strengthening our market position,’ said Grupeixe managing director Nuno Araújo, adding that this provides VSV with an entry to the rapidly growing market for oven-ready products.
‘We have a complete value chain to the Portuguese market, from fishing grounds in Iceland to the consumer. Grupeixe and ESBAL together form a complentary company structure with increased growth opportunities.’
