Bergur-Huginn’s two trawlers have been fishing well this summer, with around a thousand tonnes between then in 21 trips in July, compared to 700 tonnes in the same month last year.
Vestmannaey and Bergey work short trips and spent most of July fishing off western Iceland, catching mainly haddock plus some cod and redfish, landing their fish in the Westmann Islands and in Grundarfjörður.
The fish landed by the two 30 metre trawlers goes in different directions, with much of the haddock trucked to Dalvík in the north of Iceland for processing while the cod finds its way to production in Akureyri and their saithe is processed in the Westmann Islands. A portion of their fish is shipped in containers direct to UK markets, and the redfish goes to Germany.
The pair took a four day break at the beginning of July, and a further six days between trips over the Bank Holiday weekend at the beginning of August. They sailed on Monday and were back in a couple of days later with trips of mainly haddock and redfish caught off the south of Iceland.
