Síldarvinnslan’s pelagic vessel Börkur is alongside in Neskaupstaður to discharge 2100 tonnes of capelin.
‘This trip went well in every way and the catch was more than we had intended,’ said skipper Hjörvar Hjálmarsson.
‘The catch was taken in three shots around ten nautical miles north-west of Heimaey. The first was just 120 tonnes, but the other two were each 1000 tonnes. You don’t forget days like that.’
He commented that the capelin is excellent quality, and around 60% is female fish with a roe proportion of 19-20%.
‘Now we’re coming to the end of frozen production for Japan and we’ll soon be into roe production. The reality is that this capelin season couldn’t be much better. It’s worked out brilliantly,’ Hjörvar Hjálmarsson said.
