Tasmanian aquaculture operator Huon went for a suitable Norse name for its latest aquaculture support workboat.

Ottalaus (Fearless) is the fourth Oceantech-designed workboat for Huon, built by Lyndcraft boats. It’s powered by twin Cummins QSL9 diesel engines, rated at 425hp with twin Hamilton HJ322 jet units and will support Huon’s aquaculture activities in the south-east of Tasmania.
This follows the delivery in December last year of Cowa to Huon, powered by a Cummins QSL9 engine with a Hamilton HTX30 jet unit.
‘The arrival of Cowa at our Strahan site marks another exciting milestone for Huon. Built by Lyndcraft Boats, a proudly Tasmanian company, the vessel reflects workmanship, reliability and attention to detail that are second to none,’ said Linton Kringle, Huon’s Western Regional Manager.
‘We’ve partnered with Lyndcraft for many years and are proud of the strong relationship we’ve built. Their understanding of our operations and their ability to craft boats purpose made for Tasmanian conditions make them an invaluable partner.’

The company takes an imaginative approach to naming its boats, and Cowa is named in honour of Brett Able, who has dedicated 35 years to Huon – known affectionately as ‘Cowabunga’, a nickname earned many years ago thanks to his trademark catchphrase.
‘We couldn’t think of a more fitting tribute. We’re proud to recognise Brett in this way and to work alongside local experts like Lyndcraft. We look forward to seeing Cowa play a vital role in our operations for many years to come.’
Last year Lyndcraft Boats also delivered three 12-metre workboats to Huon Aquaculture, Banchee, Omega 3 and Oracle. All three vessels have twin 350hp Mercury v10 outboards, and Fassi M40 marine cranes.
