The Spanish tuna fleet within the OPAGAC grouping has appointed Silvia Manglano as its new project manager, with the role of managing initiatives aligned with the fleet’s Code of Good Practices aimed at minimising impacts on the marine ecosystem and ensuring the sustainability of tropical tuna such as OPAGAC’s MSC certification.
Silvia Manglano holds a degree in environmental sciences from the Autonomous University of Madrid, a master’s degree in oceanography and marine environment management from the University of Barcelona, and additional training at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz. She is currently completing a master’s thesis at the Institute of Marine Sciences (iMARES), in which she is analysing the feeding patterns of sea turtles and their ecological role in the food web.
OPAGAC’s project manager has been closely involved in marine biodiversity and biomass research projects, as well as in the design of product traceability strategies, such as the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification, and in the implementation of legislative studies on environmental regulations and sustainability reports .
Silvia Manglano has participated in research projects on marine biodiversity in protected areas such as the Natura 2000 network. She has also worked in the project development department of XCALIBUR Smart Mapping, an aerial geophysics and mapping company for which he has researched participation strategies in REDD+ programmes (international initiatives that seek to reduce emissions caused by deforestation and forest degradation). He has also collaborated in the development of biomass maps using geographic information systems (GIS).
The projects Silvia Manglano will coordinate at OPAGAC focus on key areas for improving the sustainability of tropical tuna fisheries, such as optimising data collection and reporting systems, designing tools for by-catch release, developing non-entangling and biodegradable fish aggregating devices (FADs), and models for their recycling and reuse, among others.
