Switching to split codends has been a good move, according to the skipper of one HB Grandi’s fresher trawlers, with every fish brought on board alive and with a significant increase in catch quality. Akurey has been using these codends from Hampiðjan since last autumn.
The keel of the first of a series of new trawlers for the Russian Fishery Company has been laid at the Admiralty Shipyard, part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation, in St Petersburg. The yard has also begun cutting steel for a second vessel, and the first pair of trawlers are expected to be delivered in the first half of 2020.
HB Grandi’s freezer trawler Örfirisey is now fishing in the Norwegian zone of the Barents Sea, and according to skipper Ævar Jóhannesson, they started fishing on 6th January after a four days’ steaming from Iceland.
Vigo fishing company Rampesca has placed an order with the Nodosa shipyard for a second squid catcher for Falklands waters, for delivery in 2020 to joint venture company Ferralemes.

There was plenty to see during the recent trip to Hirtshals organised by Hampiðjan which took a group of guests to the North Sea Centre’s flume tank. The highlights included a quad-rig trawl setup for shrimp developed by Cosmos Trawl, part of the Hampiðjan Group.
Fishing company Engenes Fiskeriselskap, based at Ibestad in the north of Norway, went to Rolls-Royce for the design and much of the equipment going into its new freezer trawler, and the new vessel will be built at Astilleros Gondán in Spain.
With the delivery of a seine netter/trawler or Les Sables d’Olonne completed only a a few days earlier, the Socarenam yard in Boulogne has also handed over identical trawlers for two owners in Port-en-Bessin.
Síldarvinnslan’s fresher trawler Gullver docked a few days before Christmas to land its final trip of the year; 70 tonnes of mainly cod, and bringing its 2018 tally to 6100 tonnes – making it the trawler’s best ever year.
