Vigo fishing company Rampesca has placed an order with the Nodosa shipyard for a second squid catcher for Falklands waters, for delivery in 2020 to joint venture company Ferralemes.
The new trawler is a close sister vessel to Monteferro delivered last year, and will replace the 30-year old Castelo.
The new trawler is to be built to the same 63.70 metre overall, 12 metre beam design, and will have the same inverted bow design that has performed well for Monteferro. Although the dimensions are the same, there are a few differences, including a greater engine power, and more freezing capacity, with the alterations to the original design based on the experience with the first vessel in Falklands waters.
According to Nodosa, Rampesca has pioneered the renewal of the distant water fleet, ordering the first new vessels to be built for more than ten years.
The yard currently has a strong orderbook, with a second trawler for German company Kutterfisch to be completed this year, three more seiner/trawlers for Osprey Trawlers in Holland to be completed, and a mussel harvesting vessel, plus a freezer trawler for the North Atlantic for Pesca Baqueiro, in addition to the Monteferro’s sister vessel.
