Peru’s Ministry of Production, through the FONDEPES mechanism, is implementing preventive and corrective interventions in artisanal fishing infrastructure in six regions to reduce risks from possible impacts of El Niño.
The National Government has authorised to additional funding to the National Fisheries Development Fund (FONDEPES) to carry out preventive and corrective maintenance actions in twelve artisanal landing locations, as part of the prevention measures against the possible effects of the El Niño phenomenon.
The measure will allow for work on strategic infrastructure for artisanal fishing activity and reduce the risks that could affect landing operations and the working conditions of thousands of fishermen and workers.
‘We are not going to wait for a climate event to cause damage before we act. We are taking preventative measures regarding infrastructure that is fundamental to artisanal fishing. This will allow us to reduce vulnerabilities and prepare the landing sites to better face the potential effects of El Niño,’ stated the Minister of Production, Juan Carlos Requejo.
Key initiatives include the repair, maintenance and comprehensive waterproofing of concrete slabs and lightweight roofs, the refurbishment of dock platforms and the implementation of temporary flood barriers, in addition to other work necessary to strengthen the infrastructure against adverse weather conditions.
‘The landing sites are essential for artisanal fishing to thrive. Therefore, this intervention is not limited to repairing infrastructure. It seeks to keep operational spaces that play a direct role in the economic activity and livelihood of fishing communities. Prevention is now a priority,’ Juan Carlos Requejo stated.
