A Mustad autoline system fitted some years ago on board Newfoundland longliner TNT Voyager has been successful enough for skipper and owner Dion Rydell to look at a second system for the company’s smaller fishing vessel, Buds Legacy.
‘When we first started fishing with the Mustad Autoline Coastal system about six–seven years ago, it honestly blew my mind how smooth and efficient it was. For me, it completely changed the way we fish for cod — and now I wouldn’t want to do it any other way,’ he said during a visit to Iceland and Norway to learn more about developments in longline technology.
The results have been impressive, including one three-day trip when the crew of six landed 65,000 pounds (29.50 tonnes) of gutted ccod.
‘We were one of the first companies to invest in an Autoline system after the cod returned to our waters. Besides cod, we also fish for crab, shrimp, and turbot. The system has really become a key part of our operation,’ he said.
‘This is the future of cod fishing for me,’ he said.
