‘The new R1 reels from DNG are without question the best I have used,’ said Björn Snorrason, who skippers Dalborg EA-317 from Dalvík in the north of Iceland.
He’s a long-time user of the classic 6000i reels, and was happy with them, and wasn’t sure if there was much to be gained by upgrading to the new generation R1 reels.

‘I decided to go for it, switched to the R1 reels, and absolutely don’t regret it,’ he said.
‘I noticed immediately that the R1 reels are practically silent, and that makes a difference when there are four reels at work. The big advantage is that these R1 reels quite simply fish better than the older generation, although those were also excellent reels. So this is a great investment that will quickly pay itself back,’ he said, commenting that the hauling motion is gentler, and even in slow fishing with not much to be seen on the sounder, there’s always some fish on the hooks.
‘You hardly ever see the hooks come up without a fish. That makes a real difference as this stacks up over the day. I see the design and development of the software for these reels as highly successful, and having good equipment that delivers results is a critical factor. I give the DNG reels the credit every time I reach my allowed catch.’
Björn Snorrason is a veteran of the coastal fishery, limited to inshore vessels fishing with hooks over the summer months. As one of those who has fished within thes regime since its beginning, he has extensive experience of both the older DNG reels and those from other producers.
‘I quickly came to the conclusion that these DNG reels are the ones that give the best performance,’ he said, adding that for him it doesn’t do any harm that DNG’s workshops are nearby.
‘Having service close at hand is ideal, either to fix any problems or to get guidance over the phone. My experience is that DNG’s service over the years has been excellent,’ he said.
