
Nord Pilgrim newbuilds choose Wärtsilä propulsion systems

A pair of Skipsteknisk-designed ST-116XL factory trawlers being built for Murmansk operator Nord Pilgrim are to be fitted with complete Wärtsilä propulsion packages.

The Leningrad Pella Shipyard near St Petersburg has signed contracts to deliver two freezer trawlers and a crabber for owners in Murmansk and the Russian Far East.

With the fishing industry in Russia going through reform and modernisation, the fleet being renewed long with port infrastructure and logistics, supply and the balance of imports and exports is set to change, according to the head of Russia’s Federal Agency for Fisheries, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Ilya Shestakov.

Fishing in the Russian Far East presents plenty of challenges and Andrey Fatyanov, who skippers a freezer trawler owned by Interaros, the part of Russian Fishery Group, says that fishing life is never easy, but always interesting.

Russian Far East fishing company RRPK has acquired rights to fish 2400 tonnes of crab in the Primorye sub-area.

The Vyborg Shipyard has signed contracts for two new trawlers to be completed for companies within the FOR Group of producers. Work is expected to start in 2021 on the 80.40m LOA, 15.50m factory vessels, with completion scheduled for 2022.

A Norwegian shrimp trawler is still detained in Murmansk, two weeks after an inspection by Russian Coastguard showed a flaw in the trawler’s licensing paperwork. The trawler’s owners are on their way to Russia to meet the crew who have been in limbo for the last couple of weeks.

Icelandic fishing gear supplier and manufacturer Hampiðjan has established itself with a sales office in Murmansk, with Sergei Kiselev appointed to manage sales of fishing gear from Hampiðjan and other companies within the group to Russian fishing companies, as well as handling servicing.

A Murmansk trawler has switched to using a pair of Polar Fishing Gear’s Hercules trawl doors with good results.

Contracts for new fishing vessels have been announced in Russia as fishing companies set their sights on new quotas only allocated on the basis of investment in fleet modernisation.
