The General Assembly of the Spanish Fisheries Confederation (CEPESCA) has confirmed Julio Morón position at its president for a further term.
A marine biologist with a strong track record in fisheries research and management, will continue to lead the Spanish fishing industry with the aim of ‘strengthening the sector’s strategic role in the face of the major regulatory, economic, and environmental challenges it faces.’
The re-election of Julio Morón as president of CEPESCA, as well as the continuation of the vice-presidents and members, comes at a particularly significant time for the future of the fishing sector, both Spanish and European.
The recent arrival of Costas Kadis as the new Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans at the European Commission opens a new era and opens up new expectations for the sector, which is confident in a change of course towards a more balanced and communicative fisheries policy, capable of realistically integrating environmental sustainability with the economic and social viability of fleets – at a time when a revision of the Common Fisheries Policy is about to take place.
‘We face significant challenges, and that’s why a united and strong sector is needed, both in the face of European institutions and multilateral organisations,’ Julio Morón said.
‘I firmly believe that Cepesca represents this unity and that for our sector, it is a key asset in facing these times from a position of unity, technical knowledge, and defense of the general interest of fishermen.’
Julio Morón joined tuna operators’ federation OPAGAC in 1997, first as a scientific advisor and later as managing director. Under his leadership, this organisation has promoted the Responsibly Fisheries Tuna (RFT) label, pioneering initiative in integrating biological, social, and labour certification, and now recognised as a global benchmark for sustainable fisheries.
