For the first time, a body representing the fishing sector has been granted NGO status at the International Maritime Organisation. The application by the FISH Platform has been formally accepted at the IMO general assembly.
‘This important milestone means that the FISH Platform becomes the first fisher representative body to attain membership of the IMO. It represents significant recognition of the role and voice of fishers within the global maritime community,’ a FISH PLatform representative commented.
‘Gaining consultative status will enable us to engage more directly with the IMO, its Member States, and partner organisations in shaping policy, standards, and initiatives. We look forward to working together to promote the safety, health and wellbeing of the world’s 39 million fishers, and to further support the development and implementation of international fisher safety conventions. We are grateful to our members and partners for their continued commitment to improving conditions for fishers worldwide. This achievement reflects your collective work and advocacy, and we are excited for the opportunities ahead.’
