When Faroese pelagic vessel Norðborg was delivered by its Chilean builder, the technology on its pelagic processing deck was the most modern available. But sixteen years on it’s time for an upgrade.

Its owners, Klaksvík fishing company Christian í Grótinum, first examined the options for a new vessel – having recently taken delivery of RSW pelagic vessel Christian í Grótinum, built at Karstensen in Denmark – but decided against going down the newbuild route, deterred by the DKK 800 million cost of investing in another new pelagic vessel.
The next best option was a refit to modernise and upgrade the factory deck in line with today’s customer requirments, and Norðborg will be alongside in Tórshavn for the next six months. The job was put out to tender, and won by the MEST yard, against what yard CEO Mouritz Mohr describes as stiff competition.
‘This is one if the largest projects this year and we are very proud to be selected as supplier in stiff competition with international companies,’ he said, commenting that this is a DKK 140 million investment in the vessel by Christian í Grótinum.
The planned refit is a complete modernisation, with the entire factory to be replaced and new freezers and packing lines installed.
