The IMCS Network, in partnership with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, is holding the 7th Global Fisheries Enforcement Training Workshop (GFETW), which is taking place this week in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The IMCS Network is welcoming 180 delegates from 52 countries for the only event of its kind in the world – the international meeting place for those working at the forefront of fisheries MCS, compliance, and enforcement and those that support this work at the national, regional and international level. The event offers a forum for sharing information about the challenges facing fisheries, and a place to share successful MCS and compliance initiatives and practices.
The theme for the event is Moving from Words to Action ̶ Innovative Collaborative Partnerships to Combat Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing.
TMT has been an active attendee and contributor to GFETWs since 2014, and this time is no different. As well as serving on the workshop Steering Committee, TMT Executive Director Duncan Copeland, along with Senior Analysts Eleanor Partridge and Stig Fjellberg are attending and contributing to panel presentations and discussions.
Also present are TMT’s country partners from Senegal, Liberia, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria, as well as the FCWC Regional Fisheries MCS Centre, to ensure strong West Africa representation in Halifax. The West Africa Task Force in particular is presented on Day One as part of the session on Regional Cooperation and Partnerships.
Throughout the event, participants will be introduced to effective compliance strategies and fisheries law enforcement best practices, and interactive conversations about the MCS challenges and innovations for fisheries. Tabletop exercises, panel discussions and breakout sessions have been designed to ensure participants are engaged and gain the opportunity to develop networks with their counterparts across the globe.
The IMCSN and TMT, along with Global Fishing Watch, C4ADS, and Skylight, form the membership of the Joint Analytical Cell (JAC), which will be presented at GFETW towards the development of new collaborations and operations, including with host nation Canada.
