NOAA Fisheries filed an emergency action that opened the Northeast multispecies fishery on 1st May 2025. This action ensures the fishery can continue without interruption. It is based on the best scientific information for Atlantic groundfish fisheries including cod, haddock, plaice, pollock, and other fish species.
This action supports Northeast fishing communities by keeping Northeast groundfish fishermen on the water, with continued access to fishery resources.
During the 2023 fishing year, there were more than 150 commercial vessels active in the Northeast multispecies fishery from Maine to New York. These vessels landed more than $40 million worth of groundfish, and more than $20 million worth of other species. Their continued local contributions are vital to supporting shore-side industries, fish markets, and restaurants.
‘A science-based fishery management process and continued collaboration with dedicated fishermen is imperative to the success of both the fishing industry and conservation,’ NOAA states, underscoring its commitment to strengthening the US seafood economy and supporting local fishing communities.
