One of the world’s largest fisheries, for anchovy in Peruvian waters, has got off to a difficult start this year as the decision was taken last month not to open the fishery as usual.
Now the Ministry or Production has authorised marine research institute Imarpe to implement a cautious opening of the fishery for anchovy (Engraulis ringens) and white anchovy (Anchoa nasus) from 3rd of August for ten days for larger purse seiners, on an exploratory basis.
Fishing is to take place from 16°00’S to the southern extremity of the EEZ, in waters more than five miles from the coast.
Imarpe is to co-ordinate and monitor fishing for anchovy, with the authority to close areas as required if catches of juvenile fish are excessive, and the institute is required to keep the Ministry of Production updated throughout the ten-day exloratory fishery.
Catches from this exploratory fishery will be counted against quotas for the fishery in Peru’s southern zone.
Imarpe is required to present its findings to the Ministry within four days of the end of the exploratory fishery to enable decisions to be made on subsequent measures for the anchovy fishery.
