Peru’s Minister of Production, César Quispe Luján took the opportunity of National Fish Consumption Day to report that seafood consumption in the country increased by 3.9%, rising from 13.2kg per person in 2012 to 17.1kg in 2024, thanks to the national ‘Let’s Eat Fish’ initiative.
The campaign aims to hold more than 10,000 fish markets across the country this year.
‘So far in 2026, we have already held more than 740 markets, benefiting over 171,000 families with nutritious and affordable fish,’ he stated.

Speaking at the ‘Nutrition for Families’ fair, held in the Central Plaza of Manchay, in Pachacámac, Minister Quispe Luján also highlighted that in 2025, Pachacámac ranked first in the promotion of seafood products in Metropolitan Lima, selling more than 56 tonnes of fish to benefit local residents.
During the event, residents had access to fresh marine and farmed fish, as well as canned fish products made by micro and small enterprises (MSEs), all at affordable prices. Live cooking demonstrations, fish filleting workshops, and recreational activities were also held to promote the benefits of fish consumption for all ages.
One of the highlights was PescaEmprendo, with staff from grassroots social organisations and community kitchens, previously trained by the Let’s Eat Fish programme, offered fish-based dishes, strengthening production skills and generating income for their families.
The Ministry of Production has committed to continuing the promotion of strategies that strengthen food security, encourage healthy eating habits, and contribute to local economic development.
