Icelandic Seamen’s Union, Sjómannasamband Íslands, has passed a motion demanding and challenging the government to conduct a serious investigation into the pricing of pelagic landings in Iceland.
‘There’s an ocean of difference between quayside prices in the Faroes and in Iceland,’ a representative of the Union said.
‘This is not acceptable. Plausible explanations must be given for this difference in prices.’
The Union states that negotiations for agreements should be begun as soon as practical – otherwise the matter will be sent to the state arbitrator.
Earlier this year figures were released indicating that the quayside price paid for capelin by Faroese processors during the last season was as much as three times higher than in Iceland – and this isn’t the first time that the question has been raised of the significant mismatch in prices paid by processors in Iceland compared to those in other countries.
