Catch limits for Spain’s Mediterranean red shrimp fishery have been raised, due to the addition of additional quota from the national reserve and the recent exchange reached with France. This is expected to provide a boost for the fishing sector that relies on the shrimp fishery.
The new allocation represents a total increase of 45.9 tonnes for all authorised vessels. This affects 286 Mediterranean demersal trawlers with a track records in this fishery.
These additional 45.9 tonnes consists of 35.9 tonnes from a quota swap with France, following extensive negotiation, and 10 tonnes from the reserve fund.
This quota increase will strengthen the Mediterranean bottom trawling sector, especially during the summer and Christmas seasons, and will allow for better forward planning by vessel operators. The possibility of pooling catch limits has been enabled, which facilitates operational management by both vessels and associations to better utilise available quantities.
