Pelagic vessel Barði drifted for three hours after an engine room fire on board left the vessel without power. The vessel was towed to Tórshavn.
Síldarvinnslan’s pelagic vessel Barði had been undergoing maintenance work in the Faroes, including a main engine overhaul, and was steaming back to Iceland from the shipyard when the incident ocurred.
The delivery crew of five were quickly able to smother the fire. But the vessel was left without power and it is clear that the damage to the engine room is extensive.
‘It seems the origin of the fire was in a fuel pipe on the engine room that fractured, resulting in a fireball,’ said skipper Theodór Elvar Haraldsson.
‘The crew have taken safety seriously and training drills are carried out routinely. These drills meant that every one of the crew knew what had to be done under these circumstances. Crew training made all the difference, as if the fire had burned much longer, we would have lost all control of it.’
