A project to extend quayside space and increase water depth at Port of Skagen’s auction quay is now complete as contractor CG Jensen handed the finished site over the Port of Skagen.
The width of the quay width has been extended from eight to 19 meters, while the water depth has been increased from five to seven metres, enabling the largest fishing vessels to land catches there. The quay construction itself is of concrete slab at the very edge, ensuringhygiene and optimal handling of fish that are landed.
The project was initiated following a close dialogue with the industry and fishermen to ensure the best possible outcome, with safety and sustainability considered from the outset.
All rescue ladders along the quay have been equipped with lights, allowing them to be clearly seen in the dark. Installed fenders have been selected so that the distance between the ship and the quay is as little as possible. In the construction of the new quay, suitable sand excavated from the basin bottom has been reused, while other sand has been brought ashore and disposed of in an environmentally sound manner. This means that all sand materials are kept on land and dumping outside the harbour is avoided entirely. To secure the quay against rising water levels and future weather conditions, the new quay has been built higher than the quay it replaces.
Work on establishing water and electricity works will continue in the near future.
‘At the Port of Skagen we are very happy with the cooperation we have had with contractor CG Jensen, who has delivered the project on time. Prior to the project, we have had a close dialogue with the industry and I think we have achieved our goal,’ said director of Skagen Port Willy B. Hansen.
The Port Fund has granted DKK9.5 million for quay renewal and deepening of the auction basin. The overall cost of the project is expected to be around DKK 20 million.
