A new pelagic trawler for owners in Shetland was launched yesterday at the Newbuilding Division of the Nauta Shiprepair yard in Gdańsk. Serene is to be delivered by Nauta as a partly outfitted vessel, which will be completed at the Karstensen yard at Skagen in Denmark, the shipyard’s first delivery for Shetland owners.
Serene is one of the largest fishing vessels currently under construction at the Nauta Shipyard, with an 82 metre overall length, a beam of 17 metres and a 5.90 metre draft. It is being built to the Karstensen yard’s in-house design and is one of a series of new vessels being built for owners in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and the UK. The Nauta yard in Poland plays a key role in this, as the Danish yard’s supplier of partly outfitted hull for the whole series.
The order for Serene was placed at the 2016 Aberdeen Expo and it is due to be delivered to its owners this summer.
‘Karstensen Shipyard offers a complete concept, where all solutions are optimised and tailor made to customer specifications and requirements,’ said Kent Damgaard at Karstensens. ‘This makes us independent of all suppliers, which in turn makes such an optimisation very flexible. ’
‘Serene’s design, specification and arrangements is a result of an extensive and close co-operation between the owners and the yard. The main focus has been on optimising working, safety and comfort for the crew, as well as optimisation of catch handling- and storage facilities, and fuel consumption,’ he said.
Nauta specialises in building modern fishing vessels and in 2017 launched five fishing vessels, with seven new units of this type planned to be delivered in 2018.
Another important area of the activity of shipyard’s Newbuilding Division is construction of research vessels as well as service offshore vessels. In addition, Nauta has recently signed important contracts for building a ship platform for the special purpose Signal Intelligence vessel for the Swedish Navy and for building submarine supply/ rescue vessel (code name Ratownik) for the Polish Navy.
MAN has been chosen as the supplier for Serene’s the propulsion, including a 12VL32/44 CR main engine. This will be the first slow revving main engine in Shetland/Scotland with common rail fuel injection system. The propeller design is optimised to the specific service profile of the vessel, with rpm’s between 110 and 135. This will ensure optimum bollard pull for trawling, as well as good free-sailing characteristics.
MAN will also supply the pair of heavy-duty auxiliaries, each unit driven by a MAN 6L21/31 engine. In addition, the vessel will be fitted with 125 and 250 kW harbour- and emergency gensets. The propeller and gearbox are from Scana Volda.
Karmøy Winch has been selected as the supplier of the full deck machinery package, including 90 tonne trawl winches and 110 tonne net drums. Brunvoll will supply thrusters, Johnson Controls will supply the RSW plant and the vacuum system has been ordered from Iras.
The partnership behind the Serene Fishing Company goes back to 1969 when the first Serene was delivered. Back then the partnership was headed by legendary skipper Magnus ‘Mackie’ Polson. Three of the original partners remain, headed by skipper Bobby Polson. The seven partners are Bobby Polson, Tommy Eunson, David Shearer, Leonard Polson, Gilbert Williamson, Bryan Sutherland and George Polson.
The Serene Fishing Company has had newbuildings in 1995, 1998 and 2009. This current Serene is due to be delivered to new owners Henning Veibust in Norway.
