The two trawlers operated by Icelandic company Bergur-Huginn had their best month ever in April this year, between them landing 1538 tonnes and with each of them spending 17 days at sea. The company’s previous record month was in 2009 – when there were three trawlers in the company fleet.
April was also a record month for catch values for Bergey and Vestmannaey, which landed fish worth ISK338 million (€2.73 million). The company’s previous value record was set in May 2010.
‘It’s pretty clear that we can’t complain,’ said fleet manager Arnar Richardsson, adding that the company has been outstandingly successful recently
Bergey’s skipper Jón Valgeirsson commented that this year’s spring season has been an especially goo done.
‘It has been a great season and a record catch. April was especially good for us, with really good fishing all through the month. The weather was kind to us as well, and that makes a difference.’
According to landings statistics, Bergey and Vestmannaey are Iceland’s top haddock catches, having landed 2134 tonnes of haddock this year, which is 13% of the Icelandic total so far. Their overall catches for the first four months of this year come to 4409 tonnes, which is the best this pair of trawlers built in 2007 and 2008 have landed.
Their combined catch values for the year so far are nudging the ISK1 billion (€8 million) mark.
