Police in Iceland are following up an official complaint after a fisherman attempted to shoot down a drone used for routine fisheries surveillance.
As the crew of a fishing vessel became aware of the drone overhead, one of them went to the wheelhouse and returned with a firearm, and fired three shots at the drone. The drone’s remote operator started recording as soon as the first shot was fired.
The incident was reported to the police, and officers were waiting on the quay as the fishing vessel docked to land, when statements were taken. The Coast Guard was also informed, as the incident concerns the use of a firearm.
The Directorate of Fisheries is reported to be treating the incident seriously, considering that this is a threat to its activities and the safety of its staff. According to the Directorate, a member of its staff was hindered from carrying out his duties in a threatening manner.
Firing at a drone can fall under various articles of legislation relating to the use of firearms. The Directorate has stated that it intends to pursue a prosecution against the fisherman concerned.
