Landings of more than 2,287,955 tonnes of anchovy (Engraulis ringens) and white anchovy (Anchoa nasus) for indirect human consumption have been confirmed by Peru’s Ministry of Production. This is the first season of 2024 in the country’s North-Central zone.
Minister Sergio González stated that this is equivalent to 92.44% of the 2,475,000 tonne quota for the season that began on 16th April.
‘In less than two months of the fishing season, the results are very positive. We are in the final stages and there is an encouraging outlook for the generation of economic income for the country,’ he said.
1,828,503 tonnes have been landed by the ‘steel’ fleet of larger vessels, and 459,452 by the artisanal/coastal ‘wooden’ fleet.
According to the Ministry, this first North-Central fishing season generates an estimated 11,400 direct jobs and 34,700 indirect jobs throughout the fishing activity chain, while accounting for 24% of Peru’s fishing GDP. This is worth US$831 million in foreign currency for Peru, and estimated to account for close to 8% of 2024 export totals.
