Akurey: Stepping into a new century

‘Things are going very well. The ship and its equipment have met all our expectations and to my mind the arrival of these new trawlers is a huge step into a new century,’ said Eiríkur Jónsson, skipper of HB Grandi’s new groundfish trawler Akurey, which is now in its first trip since the catch handling deck and automated fishroom systems were fitted by Skaginn 3X in Akranes.

No surprises on Commission’s position, says NFFO

The NFFO Executive Committee, which met recently in York, has reaffirmed its objectives as the UK leaves the EU against the background of the European Commission’s position that NFFO chief executive Barrie Deas described as aiming at keeping a post-Brexit UK tied into the CFP for the foreseeable future, while pressing for a status quo on quota shares and access arrangements to be maintained.

French ports blockaded

Threatened action by French fishermen began early this morning as Calais and other ports have been blockaded. Ferry and freight services have been suspended, with the busy port of Calais seriously affected, while Dutch seine netters in Boulogne due to weather have been unable to leave.
