Tuna Australia has appointed Neil Hughes as its new CEO. Based in Mooloolaba, he brings more than 35 years of fisheries management, policy and international negotiation experience to the role.
He will lead Tuna Australia as the industry continues to navigate a range of opportunities and challenges, including sustainability, market access, workforce needs and evolving consumer expectations.
‘I’m excited about what lies ahead for Australia’s tuna industry,’ Neil Hughes said.
‘I look forward to working with members and stakeholders to support a strong, sustainable and competitive future for the sector.”
His background spans the industry, the Australian Fisheries Management Authority and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. He has represented Australia at major regional fisheries management organisations, including the Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna, the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission and the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission.
Tuna Australia chair Ian Cartwright has welcomed the appointment.
‘Neil has extensive leadership experience and a strong understanding of the fisheries, agribusiness and seafood sectors,’ he said.
‘His deep knowledge of the issues facing the sector and his strong relationships across industry and government will be invaluable.’
Neil Hughes succeeds David Ellis, who has served as CEO since Tuna Australia was established in 2016.
‘David has played a pivotal role in establishing Tuna Australia as a respected voice for the industry,’ Ian Cartwright commented. ‘We thank him for his leadership and commitment over the past decade and wish him all the best for the future.’
