The Ministry of Fisheries has welcomed today’s statement from Maersk Shipping Line clarifying that it is continuing to carry New Zealand fish.
Media statements made yesterday indicated that Maersk was refusing to transport some New Zealand fish species.
Maersk is reviewing its policy on the transportation of fish and the Ministry of Fisheries is happy to provide input to this process.
Ministry Chief Executive Wayne McNee is happy to assure seafood consumers and Maersk Line that all seafood caught under New Zealand’s world class quota management system is sustainable and well managed.
“The Ministry of Fisheries manages all New Zealand’s fisheries closely to make sure catches are sustainable” Mr McNee said. “It is important to us to make sure that fish will be available for future generations, we will not hesitate to take decisive management action to make sure that happens.”
“New Zealand’s Quota Management System has received praise around the world but we are constantly working to improve it.”
“Just this week the Government announced a major boost to spending on research into deepwater fishstocks like orange roughy, with 170 million dollars being spent over the next ten years.”
