Several Icelandic pelagic vessels have been searching for herring in the Jan Mayen area, with little success so far. Among those searching for herring is Lundey NS, but the trip saw only 80 tonnes of herring landed on Saturday to HB Grandi’s processing plant in Vopnafjördur where it was processed for human consumption.
According to Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson, head of HB Grandi’s pelagic division, Lundey is now fishing for herring east of Iceland, pair trawling with Ingunn AK.
‘Lundey took the place of Faxi, which sailed for Vopnafjördur with 1650 tonnes of herring and mackerel at the weekend. Faxi is now steaming back to the fishing grounds and the intention is for Ingunn to then to steam back to Vopnafjördur with the catches that they have caught with Lundey. Ingunn had 750 tonnes this morning and if everything works out, they should be in Vopnafjördur tomorrow. We’re doing what we can to process and freeze as much as we can, but there has been a lot of feed in the fish off the east coast and we’ll have to see how much of it can go for freezing,’ said Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson.
