Icelandic fishing company HB Grandi continues to make changes to its operations in the wake of the company’s recent changes in ownership and management. Redundancies have been announced at its Vopnafjörður location in eastern Iceland and the crew of one of the company’s demersal trawlers have been given notice.
Iceland’s Atlanto-Scandian herring season has come to an end for this year, with Síldarvinnslan’s pelagic vessel Börkur finishing with a 1225 tonne herring landing in Neskaupstaður last week.
This year’s mackerel season has been different to previous years, and for east coast company Síldarvinnslan the season began with a landing on the 19th of July, and fishing has been patchy at intervals, with much of the activity in international waters.
Hampiðjan subsidiary Fjarðarnet’s new net loft is taking shape rapidly at Neskaupstaður in the east of Iceland.
Talks are in progress towards the amalgamation of a number of seamen’s unions in Iceland. The aim is to establish a stronger organisation ahead of the coming negotiations over labour agreements with vessel owners’ body SFS.
There has been good fishing for herring on fishing grounds east of Iceland over the past few days, although bad weather has made it heavy going at times for the fleet.
An acoustic survey of the capelin stock carried out north of Iceland and south-west of Greenland during September has not returned results substantial enough for an initial quota to be allocated – although the Marine Research Institute has yet to finish processing the data.
Visiting trawlers have been making regular calls in Neskaupstaður and have accounted for landings of around 1700 tonnes of fish this summer.
Fishing and processing company FISK Seafood, based at Sauðárkrókur in the north of Iceland, has acquired a one-third stake in Westmann Islands company Vinnslustöðin (VSV) from Brim hf.
