Fishing has been good on mackerel in the international zone between Norway, Iceland and the Faroe Islands in the last few days.
Icelandic fishing company HB Grandi continues to go through a period of change that began when a third of its ownership changed hands earlier this year. The company has announced the acquisition of another operator – and that its new freezer trawler currently under construction in Spain may be for sale.
Icelandic fishing companies Samherji and Síldarvinnslan have contracted with the Karstensen yard in Denmark for a pair of new pelagic vessels, replacing older vessels.
Fishing company Kambur, based at Hafnarfjörður in Iceland, has taken delivery of a new Cleopatra 46B dedicated longliner from Trefjar. The new fully shelterdecked boat replaces an older vessel of the same name.
A second quarter loss of €252,000 posted by HB Grandi has been described as ‘unacceptable’ by the company’s new managing director and largest shareholder. The figures have been published as part of the company’s quarterly report.
Most of the Icelandic fleet’s fishing for mackerel is now in international waters just beyond the 200 mile limit as a heavy migration of herring in the Hvalbakur area has made fishing for mackerel difficult in home waters.
Skaginn 3X was recently awarded a Horizon 2020-funded SME Instrument grant, which will play a key part in further developing SEASCANN, a cutting-edge vision and grading technology. This is expected not only result in optimum product quality and to contribute to preventing overfishing, but also to provide operational savings for users.
The Icelandic pelagic fleet has been busy on mackerel after a quiet spell, and landings are now coming thick and fast to ports in the east of the country.
HB Grandi’s groundfish production at its Norðurgarður location has gone well throughout the quota year that comes to an end on the last day of August. A staff of around 160 work in production and process 550 to 600 tonnes of saithe, redfish and cod every week.
With a few trips now behind it, Vinnslustöðin’s new trawler Breki, delivered earlier this year, has more than met the expectations of both its owners and crew.
