Icelandic Fisheries Minister Kristján Thór Júlíusson has acted on the legislation that allows 5.3% of the overall quota to be held back for a range of particular purposes, including supporting coastal communities, quota markups for longliners, coastal fisheries, support for shrimp and shellfish vessels, sport fisheries and to met other temporary requirements.
Negotiations have been in progress since 2016, but agreement has now been reached between Iceland, Greenland and Norway on capelin fisheries that take place in Icelandic waters. The previous agreement dated back to 2003.
Freezer trawler Blængur docked in Neskaupstaður on Sunday night after what is believed to be best trip ever by a trawler from Norðfjörður, with a catch value of around ISK380 million (€3 million).
Longliner Sævík left Iceland last year and was towed to Gdansk, emerging as a practically new fishing vessel ready to replace one of operating company Vísir’s older longliners.
‘We can safely say that everything has gone like clockwork since we took delivery of the ship. The trial strips went well and it didn’t take long for everything to be working as it should. We’ve had two trips to the Westfjords fishing grounds and we had practically a full fishroom each time,’ said Jóhannes Ellert Eiríksson, known to everyone simply as Elli, skipper of HB Grandi’s new trawler Viðey.
As had been expected, Icelandic fisheries minister Kristján Thór Júlíusson has followed the Marine Research Institute’s advice precisely in setting quotas for the 2018-19 quota year, which begins on 1st September.
Following the acquisition earlier this year of a substantial stake in Iceland’s largest fishing and processing company, changes are taking place. Guðmundur Kristjánsson, who also owns fishing company Brim and stakes in a number of others, and who acquired the roughly 32% holding in HB Grandi, takes over as the new managing director.
One of HB Grandi’s new trawlers is on the way to Reykjavík, on the end of a towing hawser.
Guðbjartur Thórarinsson takes over as managing director of Icelandic fishing gear company Ísfell, bringing with him a broad experience of various sectors of the fishing industry.
Síldarvinnslan’s trawler Gullver landed its first trip after the Seamen’s Day break with 67 tonnes of groundfish after a short trip of only two and a half days at sea.
