HB Grandi fresher trawler Helga María AK-16 docked in Reykjavík yesterday with 90 tonnes on board after a short trip on grounds off south-western Iceland. According to skipper Bjarni H. Garðarsson, they sailed last Friday but had to cut the trip short due to a fault in the ship’s steam boiler.
HB Grandi’s pelagic trawler Venus is due to dock at the north-east Iceland port of Vopnafjörður today with 2750 tonnes of blue whiting on board, the result of a week fishing south of the Faroe Islands where bad weather and the difficult conditions it brings made it a hard week’s fishing.
A new house was taken into use last November at the premises of Útgerðarfélag Akureyringa (ÚA). One year passed from when a decision was made to demolish the old barracks and construct a new building, until it was ready for use.

HB Grandi’s trawlers have made a good start to the new year. As in previous years, the search is on for saithe around the coast, but saithe are not easy to find. On the other hand, there is plenty of cod at this time of year while redfish remain elusive.
Last year 55,0000 tonnes of frozen products made their way through cold stores run by Síldarvinnslan in eastern Iceland.
The search for capelin is in progress in Icelandic waters, with research vessels Árni Friðriksson and Bjarni Sæmundsson heading the search, along with commercial fishing vessels Sigurður, Sighvatur Bjarnason and Jóna Eðvalds.
Iceland’s National Association of Small Boat Owners (NASBO) has reached an agreement with fuel company Skeljungur to supply fuel to its members at a price linked to the cost of fuel on the world market. NASBO has kept a close eye on changing trends across the fuel market, publishing price figures for fuel at the pump from the three main Icelandic suppliers.
