Icelandic pelagic trawler Hoffell SU-80 has followed the trend and switched to using Vónin’s new Tornado pelagic trawl doors.

As the Tornado name indicates these trawl doors are exceptionally powerful, allowing Hoffell to drop 2.80 square metres in trawl door size from the previous 13.80 square metre doors.

According to skipper Bergur Einarsson, they were still getting plenty of spreading power with the Tornado doors for Hoffell’s Vónin 2016 metre Capto trawl for blue whiting

Hoffell’s Tornados are 11 square metres and are rigged in mid-setting both front and back.

Asked if there was anything with the Tornado doors that he was not pleased with, Bergur simply said ‘No.’

Check out the video shot by Hoffell crewman Birgir Runar Saemundsson, showing the doors shooting away and spreading rapidly once they hit the water

With their relatively high angle of attack, the doors are lift very smoothly onto the gallows when hauling the gear.
