The search for capelin in Icelandic waters is still in progress, but hope for a season this winter appears to be running low.
In the meantime, the pelagic fleet has been focused on blue whiting, and 3700 tonnes were landed to Neskaupstaður alone last weekend, all caught in Faroese waters. Síldarvinnslan’s Barði, Beitir and Börkur all headed back to the Faroese EEZ during the week.
According to the company’s fleet manager Grétar Örn Sigfinnsson, all three are now on fishing grounds, where there aren’t many vessels at work.
‘The weather outlook isn’t particularly good, with a depression on the forecast chart. But not much happens if you’re not there when there’s a fishing opportunity shows up,’ he said.
‘There hasn’t been much in Faroese waters recently and the fish are migrating southwards. of course we’re waiting in hope for results of the current capelin survey. But if that doesn’t come with a positive outcome, then we’ll undoubtedly start preparing for fishing blue whiting in the Rockall area,’ he said.
