Pelagic vessel Margrét has delivered the first mackerel of the season to Síldarvinnslan’s plant in Neskaupstaður with a 700-tonne landing.
Síldarvinnslan’s pelagic vesels Börkur and Beitir sailed at the beginning of the week to search for mackerel inside the Icelandic EEZ, but with little to be seen, they steamed to where there has been fishing for mackerel recently in international waters.
Margrét is working a co-operative schedule with the two Síldarvinnslan vessels and another Samherji vessel, Vilhelm Thorsteinsson. Under this arrangement, catches are pumped onto one of the four vessels, and turns are taken to steam home to land. This cuts down steaming time to and from fishing grounds, and ensures that catches are delivered as fresh as possible for processing.
Another payload is already on its way to Neskaupstaður, with Börkur steaming home with 830 tonnes of mackerel in its tanks.
