Faroese salmon producer Bakkafrost went to Norwegian supplier Aquateknikk for the feed system at its flagship smolt production facility in Skalavik.
The smolt facility is designed to produce 28.6 million (500g) smolt annually, and it has a 28,600 cubic metre overall capacity across three independent modules, with 56 tanks ranging from three to 20 metres in diameter.
The feed requirement is predicted to be 12,500kg per day as it reaches full operation.
Aquateknikk is delivering MAFA silos with real-time weighing on every tank, with stepless motor control under which operators set gram/minute, and the Aquateknikk system handles the rest
Temperature compensation and appetite-based feeding algorithms are built in, and there is 24/7 monitoring from a single unified control centre
‘Smolt quality is the foundation of the entire salmon chain. When Bakkafrost chose Aquateknikk for complete feed logistics and precision control, they chose to future-proof one of the North Atlantic’s most demanding growing environments,’ an Aquateknikk representative commented.
The installation is expected to launch in late 2026.
