France’s National Fisheries Committee, the body representing the fishing sector, has held a general meeting, attended by Minister responsible for fisheries Agnès Pannier-Runacher. The outcome is seen as a constructive dialogue between government and industry.

Subjects covered ranged from fleet renewal, with the ministry stating that every measure will be taken, to policy on MPAs and decommissioning.
‘This meeting is an important step. We found a Minister who listens and who is well informed about issues we face. This is a reassuring signal for all French fishermen,’ said CNPMEM president Olivier Le Nézet.
Further outcomes are for a qualitative approach on MPAs. 78% of sea areas are already subject to protective measures, and the ministry has pledged to use case-by-case management, based on the requirements of a varietyof sectors in each territory.
The heavy proliferation of seaweed in Martinique and Guadeloupe is seriously affecting fishing activity, and an action plan, technical assessments and the mobilisation of European funds have been announced.
‘Exchanges have been frank and direct, but the industry now needs concrete steps with a clear timetable on identified goals. The topics discussed are constructive, as they define the future of our sector right now. We can’t wait any longer. We will work with the state to continue this work, bringing our expertise to the table, setting out red lines if necessary, but always in constructive manner,’ Olivier Le Nézet commented.
