The Faroese and UK authorities have agreed reciprocal fishing rights for 2025, which includes a UK quota for cod in the NAFO area that goes to the Faroes.
In UK waters, Faroese vessels have access to Greenland halibut, ling, blue ling and haddock. In return the UK fleet gets access to haddock and saithe, plus a by-catch allowance of cod in Faroese waters, in addition to redfish, ling, blue ling and flatfish.
Defra estimates the value of fish from the Faroese EEZ as being worth £5 million to the UK fleet, based on historical prices.
‘I’m pleased the UK has reached an agreement with the Faroe Islands that will allow UK fishing vessels to take advantage of valuable fishing opportunities in 2025,’ said UK fisheries minister Daniel Zeichner.
‘This agreement concludes the UK’s fisheries negotiations for 2025 and will see our fleet ready to take advantage of the quotas secured through these key negotiating forums.
