Peru’s Ministry of Production has authorised marine research institute IMARPE to conduct exploratory fishing with large-scale purse seine vessels for anchovy (Engraulis ringens) and white anchovy (Anchoa nasus) in the southern part of the country’s EEZ.
This is expected to be a ten-day survey, aiming to evaluate the distribution of anchovy in Peruvian waters. IMARPE is required to report back to the Ministry, and it also has the authority to recommend closures due to high proportions of juvenile fish.
Catches taken during this exploratory fishery are counted against quotas for the area, and participating purse seiners are required to work with approved gear and to be outfitted with SISESAT satellite reporting systems.
The Ministry warns that vessels failing to comply with these requirements will be subject to immediate exclusion from the fishery, as well as from subsequent activities relating to scientific work for a year.
