MSC Belgium has nominated the Dutch shrimp fishery in the most important MSC-certified fishery award category.
Since 2022, the MSC Sustainable Fish Awards Belgium have been presented to organisations that are committed to making the fishing sector more sustainable. Awards can be won in various categories and each year the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) makes a selection of organisations that ensure sustainable fish on the consumer’s plate. An independent jury of experts determines the winner of each category.
With this nomination, part of the MSC Sustainable Fish Awards Belgium, the Dutch shrimp fishery is recognised for its sustainability practices. The winners of the MSC Sustainable Fish Awards Belgium will be chosen on 12th September.
Most important MSC-certified fishery is one of nine categories. Three fisheries have been nominated – the Dutch mussel fishery, the Icelandic cod fishery and the Dutch shrimp fishery.
‘We are proud to provide the consumer with sustainable, responsible and locally caught shrimp,’ said Amerik Schuitemaker of the Cooperative Fisheries Organisation which manages the Dutch shrimp fishery’s MSC certificate.
‘The nomination shows that MSC sees the efforts the shrimp fishery is making to take sustainable steps and recognises this. It is also a motivation for the shrimp fishery to continue working on sustainable fishing, so that the consumer can continue to enjoy MSC-certified Dutch shrimp in the future.’
