The new Sydney Fish Market building has now reached what’s described as ‘practical completion’, meaning that the operators have the keys to the market’s new home while finishing touches are added to this ultra-modern harbourside facility and they’re working with retailers ahead of opening in January next year.

The new Sydney Fish Market is deliberately designed as an authentic working fish market – not just a retail or food-hall experience.
Purpose-built for the seafood trade, the new market features dedicated quays for fishing vessels to discharge catches, as well as modern wholesale and auction facilities to continue the daily trade connecting Australia’s fishers with seafood buyers and businesses across Sydney and beyond.
Behind the scenes, enhanced infrastructure such as large-scale ice-making and high-capacity crate-washing systems will support the heavy demands of Australia’s busiest seafood marketplace, ensuring operations remain efficient.
The new site is approximately 20% larger than the current facility, and it will be a much more efficient use of space. It’ll be home to more than 40 retailers – including fresh seafood outlets, speciality stores, cafés and restaurants, ranging from casual fish and chips to fine dining. Almost all current tenants, including all seafood retailers, are making the move, and be joined by more than twenty new operators featuring premium food retail, celebrated chefs and a variety of cuisines.

The current market site will continue full operations through the Christmas period, giving the community a last hurrah before the move.
The new building has a majestic, wave-like roof spanning approximately 200 metres in width. The roof is also functional, with more than 400 solar-panel lined cassettes contributing to the daily energy consumption of the building. The roof surface allows reflected sunlight to naturally illuminate the upper levels while offering shading from direct rays. It will also collect rainwater, with the recycled water being used for irrigation and amenities.
As well as being a fully functioning auction, the new Sydney Fish Market offers a unique visitor experience that celebrates the city’s love of seafood and its maritime and cultural heritage.
