Baffin Fisheries has opted for a Carose factory deck for its new trawler, under construction at the Tersan shipyard.

The new 80-metre Skipsteknisk-designed vessel will be Canada’s largest trawler, built to fish for shrimp and Greenland halibut. It will have a carrying capacity for 1320 tonnes of frozen product when fishing for Greenland halibut (turbot) or 930 tonnes of shrimp.

‘This vessel deserves a first-class factory, and we are very happy to be chosen as the processing partner. The factory is designed to ensure high yield, automated process and easy handling,’ said Carsoe’s sales director Jeppe Christensen

Carsoe will be supplying the complete installation, including automated by-catch separation, shrimp grader and a batch cooking line. Processed shrimp can be frozen in one of the three IQF tunnel freezers or in the two Automatic Horizontal Freezers in a fully automated freezing process.

Processed and frozen catches go to the packing section of the factory with two robotic hotels for sorting. The pallets are layer wrapped for safe storage at sea and labelled before the completed pallet it is sent to the cargo hold. Utilising space to its maximum potential includes using a hybrid palletising solution with an integrated elevator, taking pallets directly from palletising to the cargo hold.

The automated flow in the processing plant means less heavy lifting and a better working environment for the crew.

‘Carsoe was chosen after a very competitive bidding process and consultation with our captains, vessel crew, and the shipyard, which has worked with Carsoe many times in the past,’ said Baffin Fisheries’ CEO Chris Flanagan.

‘We are very pleased with the selection and look forward to working with Carsoe as a true partner throughout the build process, and into operations.’
Carsoe has worked with Baffin Fisheries for many years and have handled several services, maintenance, and rebuild jobs on their two existing freezing trawlers Sivilluq and Inuksuk.

‘At Baffin Fisheries, we have benefited well from Carsoe service over the past several years with Inuksuk l and Sivilluq on major factory upgrades and general refit factory maintenance,’ fleet manager Jason Dunphy said.

‘We have benefited from Carsoe’s pre-engineered solutions, efficient and effective implementation, pre-set cost budgets, productive workdays by experienced technicians – all followed up with great parts supply and shipping, when operations are in full swing.’
