The fishing community in Brittany is paying its respects to the memory of André Le Berre, who passed away on 30th November at the age of eighty.
Born in Loctudy, he went to sea at the age of fifteen, working in trawlers in the south Finistère region, and quickly worked his way up. As skipper of An Yvidig, ‘Dédé’ always made sure to share his energy and experience.
When fishing in Brittany was int a critical situation in the early 1990s, a representative of the CGT union, he energetically defended the profession as president of the Guilvinec local fisheries committee.
Elected at the turn of the millennium to the presidency of the Brittany regional fisheries committee, André Le Berre guided the industry towards greater consideration of environmental issues, while also advocating for the modernisation of their fishing gears and equipment. He stepped down in 2012, he maintained his commitment to seafarers, notably with the French National Sea Rescue Society (SNSM), where he held significant responsibilities until relatively recently.
