Two Whalsay-based fishing vessel owners have placed orders for new pelagic vessels that will join the Shetland fleet in late 2027 and early 2028.

The new Serene will replace a vessel built in 2018, which will be going to owners in the Faroe Islands, while the new Antares will replace a pelagic vessel built in 2016.
Both new vessels are to be built at the Karstensen yard in Skagen, and both are the yard’s own designs. The overall value of these two orders is reported to be close to £100 million.
Serene, scheduled for delivery in December 2017, will have an 85-metre overall length and an 18.20-metre breadth. The owners have opted for a 7320kW MAN 12V32/44 main engine.
Antares will follow a few months later in March 2028 and will have a 78.50-metre overall length with a 17-metre beam and a 6960kW Wärtsilä12V32 main engine.
Both vessels will be outfitted with SeaQuest Systems deck equipment and cranes, and PTG FrioNordica RSW systems.
